In our post of 7 October 2009 we looked briefly at a few issues impacting book collecting. We had hoped for a response to this dispatch from some of our more seasoned collectors and/or booksellers, but having received none, we thought we might offer a more lengthy missive on much the same topic from one of our favorite booksellers and essayists, David Mason, owner of David Mason Books:
We have never had the pleasure of meeting David in person, but we have followed his career with some interest since first becoming aware of him through a lecture he gave at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto almost 15 years ago. One of the most knowledgeable booksellers of his generation, David pulls no punches when he examines bookselling in the Age of the Internet.
So grab yourself a cup of coffee (or tea), and maybe a bite to eat, and settle in for a while. 'Cause this ain't some ignorant yo-yo tellin' ya how it is. You might actually want to pay attention, 'cause it's all about Selling Civilization....
